The events of the “Arab Spring” have touched Yemen in the form of a major popular uprising, a violent division of the ruling elite, and ultimately the resignation of President Ali Saleh, who has ruled since 1978. Despite these recent events, Yemen is a state on the verge of failure. It faces serious ecological, political, social and economical challenges that have no easy or obvious solutions. This presentation will outline the crises that confront Yemen, the transformations that have taken place over the last several years, and the role being played by regional and international actors in the unfolding events, in particular Saudi Arabia and the United States.
