Women in U.S. Politics

The 2018 U.S. midterm elections were heralded “Year of Women” by the media: a record number of women filed to run for office and won. For the first time, Native Americans and Muslim Women were elected, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and a historically high number of people of colour now have a sit in Capitol Hill. Yet, in spite of these victories, barriers still remain. Women are still underrepresented in politics compared to their share of the U.S. population.
Victoria A. Budson, Founder and Executive Director of the Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP) at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government,
will discuss these issues with Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, former French Minister of Women’s Affairs and first French woman to be appointed Minister of Education and Research. She is also currently Co-director of Sciences Po’s Gender Equality and Public Policy Certificate,
and students from the Sciences Po Gender Equality and Public Policy Certificate.
