The Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) is honoured to announce the inaugural lesson for the Class of 2023.
Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, will deliver the lecture on the theme Prosperity without Growth? Building Back Better after the Crisis”.
Introduction and moderation by Mark Maloney, Acting Dean of the Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA).
As a result of the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, governments have injected massive amounts of liquidities into the economy, in order to « restart the engine ». This has saved many jobs and companies: although the crisis will lead to a significant increase in poverty in the world, the « recovery plans » adopted in all world regions largely helped to cushion to shock. Yet, the environmental crisis has not disappeared.
More than ever, biodiversity loss, climate change, and resource depletion confront humanity with an existential threat. Does this mean that we should abandon the idea of growth as a solution to the economic crisis? Or can we conceive of a different kind of growth — green and inclusive, rather than extractive and worsening inequalities?
Olivier De Schutter is the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. He was between 2008 and 2014 the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, and a member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights between 2015 and 2020.  A specialist of economic and social rights and of the theory of governance, he held teaching appointments in the past at Columbia University, at UC Berkeley, at Yale University, and at the College of Europe. He currently holds appointments at UC Louvain and at Sciences Po. He was awarded the prestigious Francqui Prize for his contributions to governance in the EU.
