Alice Mesnard

Alice MESNARD is a Reader in Economics at City University of London and the Chair of the Academic Board of the University of Paris Dauphine -PSL (London). Prior to joining City, she was a Senior Economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies where she worked at the Center for the Evaluation of Development Policies (EdePo).

Her main research interests are in the fields of development economics, migration, policy evaluations and applied microeconomics. Her research has been mainly devoted to understanding the role of public policies in improving human development in relation to migration, education (Conditional Cash Transfer programme "Familias en Acción" in Colombia), health (maternal health and nutrition programmes in Malawi, Health Insurance in Nigeria, Quarantine measures after the outbreak of infectious diseases such as Ebola) and labour market (New Deal programmes in the UK).

Steven Durlauf

Steven DURLAUF is the Steans Professor in Educational Policy at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory as well as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). In 2011, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is co-director of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Working Group, an international research network linking scholars across disciplines in the study of inequality and the sources of human flourishing and destitution. Among his editorial duties, he is the current Editor of the Journal of Economic Literature.

His research spans many topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics. His most important substantive contributions involve the areas of poverty, inequality and economic growth. Much of his research has attempted to integrate sociological ideas into economic analysis. His major methodological contributions include both economic theory and econometrics. He helped pioneer the application of statistical mechanics techniques to the modelling of socioeconomic behaviour and has also developed identification analyses for the empirical analogs of these models. Other research has focused on techniques for policy evaluation and the econometrics of cross country income differences.

The Department is very pleased to announce that it will be organising the Association Française de Science Économique - French Economic Association’s 71st Annual Congress from June 14th to 16th, 2023.

The French Economic Association (AFSE) is a nonprofit organisation founded in 1950. It aims at promoting exchange of knowledge and participation of its members in public debates on economic policies. It is open to all economists, whether they work in universities, public research organizations, Government bodies or private companies.

Every year, the AFSE holds a congress that brings together its members from across France as well as international keynote speakers and special sessions with economists from abroad, with the goal of discussing and disseminating the latest research in economics.

The 2023 edition will take place at Sciences Po Paris.

The AFSE is presently calling for online submissions for its 2023 Annual Congress:

  • Submissions of full papers are invited from academic, government and business economists in any field of economics.
  • Papers borrowing methodologies from other sciences are very welcome too.
  • Presentations will take place exclusively in English.

AFSE membership will also be required to be a speaker once your paper is accepted. Details on how to become a member of the AFSE or to update your membership status can be found here.

DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28th, 2023.

Papers should be submitted online on the 2023 AFSE Annual Congress website.

Accepted submissions will be notified on April 15th.

Angelo Zago

Angelo ZAGO is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Verona. He has also been visiting faculty member in other universities, such as Copenhagen, Paris, New York, Cambridge, Toulouse and Brisbane.

His research interests include production economics, industrial organisation, international trade, contract theory, and vertical relations. He is an applied economist working on efficiency and productivity, with some methodological papers and more applied work in different sectors. His work in industrial organisation focuses in particular on issues regarding quality, information, and the role and working of different market organisations. The focus is on food markets, but the methods are general.

Angelo ZAGO will present a paper, joint with Philippe Bontems and Diego Lubian, at the next Paris Trade Seminar, on the theme:
