A Candid and Public Conversation about Investor-State Arbitration.
Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Professor Philippe Sands QC offer assessments about the current state of investor-state arbitration, with a focus on the challenge to legitimacy and effectiveness from economic, legal and human perspective.

  • Joseph E. Stiglitz is University Professor at Columbia University, the winner of the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, and a lead author of the 1995 IPCC report, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. At Columbia, Stiglitz co-chairs the Committee on Global Thought and is founder and co-president of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue. His latest book, People, Power, and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent, was released in April.
  • Professor Philippe Sands QC teaches at University College London and Harvard Law School, is a practising barrister at Matrix Chambers, and the author of East West Street/Retour a Lemberg. He has acted as counsel or arbitrator in more than fifty investor state arbitrations since 1988. His new book, The Ratline: Love Lies and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive, will be published next April.
