Prof. Odile Goerg: On Africa’s complex history
“The idea is to do away with the myth that Africa had no history before colonisation”. Africa’s long and diverse history comes alive in this class by historian Odile Goerg, a storied traveller of the continent who teaches history armed with a catalogue of hundreds of adventures.

Professor Emeritus Odile Goerg has taught the History of Contemporary Africa at the University of Paris Diderot, and teaches the class the History of Africa at the Sciences Po campus at Reims, to undergraduate students on the Europe-Africa programme. Herself a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, where she is a Fellow in History holding a PhD in Political Sciences, Odile Goerg’s research focuses on social and cultural history in an urban context. She has written for the publications Vingtième Siècle, Cahiers d’Etudes Africaines, Politique Africaine, Africa today and Afrika Zamani, and has written in many collaborative books. Dr. Goerg has also edited diverse works on independence, Islam, urban society and gender in Africa. Her students are in expert company!
