En attribuant un doctorat honoris causa à Angela Merkel, Sciences Po veut distinguer une femme d’État au parcours exceptionnel, l'une des personnalités politiques qui a le plus marqué la construction européenne de l’après-guerre froide. Oeuvrant sans relâche en faveur des relations franco-allemandes et de la coopération internationale, le rôle essentiel et exemplaire qu’elle a joué lors de la crise migratoire de 2015 demeure dans toutes les mémoires.

Université internationale de recherche en sciences humaines et sociales, qui forme des cadres politiques, économiques, administratifs et scientifiques depuis un siècle et demi, Sciences Po œuvre avec ardeur et une profonde conviction au développement des coopérations universitaires européennes et mondiales. Les relations franco-allemandes tiennent une place centrale dans son histoire.
C’est pourquoi la présidente de la Fondation nationale des sciences politiques, Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, le directeur de Sciences Po, Mathias Vicherat, la faculté permanente, les étudiants et les personnels de Sciences Po, sont particulièrement fiers d’attribuer ce prestigieux titre universitaire à une personnalité de l’envergure d’Angela Merkel, qui incarne si hautement les convictions et les ambitions de notre établissement.
28e personnalité à recevoir un doctorat honoris causa à Sciences Po, succédant à Boutros Boutros Ghali (en 1993), à Vàclav Havel (en 2009), à Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva dit Lula (en 2011) et, plus récemment à Elena Zhemkova de l’organisation russe Memorial (qui a reçu le Prix Nobel de la Paix quelques mois après sa distinction), Angela Merkel recevra cette distinction le mardi 27 juin 2023 à 18h dans l’amphithéâtre Émile Boutmy. La laudation sera prononcée par Laurence Bertrand Dorléac.
Angela Merkel s’exprimera en allemand. Une traduction simultanée en français et en anglais sera proposée.
Les étudiantes et étudiants sont invités à venir assister à cet événement sur le campus et à se réunir dans les amphithéâtres Émile Boutmy, Jacques Chapsal et Leroy Beaulieu.
Le développement de relations solides avec l’Allemagne est une priorité stratégique de Sciences Po. Aujourd’hui, plus de 700 étudiants allemands étudient à Sciences Po, ce qui nous place parmi les universités françaises accueillant le plus d’étudiants d’Outre-Rhin. Membre active de l’Université Franco-Allemande et du réseau de recherche du CIERA, Sciences Po compte un total de 27 universités partenaires en Allemagne et décline des actions communes à tous les niveaux de la formation et de la recherche. Ainsi, Sciences Po propose un bachelor mineure Union Européenne – fruit d'un partenariat franco-allemand réputé qui se déroule sur le campus de Nancy – mais aussi 3 doubles diplômes (avec la Freie Universität et la Hertie School, qui est aussi membre de CIVICA, notre alliance d'universités européennes). Enfin, la Chaire Alfred Grosser et le programme AxPo témoignent des relations fructueuses que les chercheurs de Sciences Po entretiennent depuis de nombreuses années avec leurs collègues allemands. À travers ces axes de coopération, Sciences Po s’est imposée comme un acteur universitaire majeur du lien franco-allemand.
Ceremony for Angela Merkel’s Honorary Doctorate Conferment
In awarding Angela Merkel an honorary doctorate, Sciences Po wishes to honour the stateswoman and her remarkable career. Merkel is among the political figures who have had the greatest impact on post-Cold War European integration. She has worked tirelessly to promote Franco-German relations and international cooperation, and will long be remembered for the essential and admirable role she played in the 2015 migrant crisis.

As an international research university of the humanities and social sciences, which has trained leading politicians, economists, civil servants and researchers for a century and a half, Sciences Po works passionately and with profound conviction to develop European and international academic cooperation. Franco-German relations have played a central role in the university’s history.
It is for this reason that the President of the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques, Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, the President of Sciences Po, Mathias Vicherat, the university’s permanent faculty, and the students and staff of Sciences Po, are particularly proud to award this prestigious academic title to a figure of such eminence as Angel Merkel, who so perfectly embodies the beliefs and ambitions of this institution.
Merkel is the 28th public figure to receive an honorary doctorate from Sciences Po, preceded by Boutros Boutros Ghali (in 1993), Vàclav Havel (in 2009), Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, also known as Lula (in 2011), and, more recently, Elena Zhemkova from the Russian organisation Memorial (who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize a few months after her doctorate). Merkel will receive her title at 6pm on Tuesday, 27 June 2023 in the Émile Boutmy Lecture Hall. The laudation will be pronounced by Laurence Bertrand Dorléac.
Merkel’s speech will be given in German. Simultaneous translations will be provided in French and English.
Students are invited to attend this event on campus in the amphitheaters Boutmy, Chapsal and Leroy Beaulieu.
The development of strong relations with Germany is a strategic priority for Sciences Po. Today, more than 700 German students study at Sciences Po, which places us among the French universities welcoming the most students from across the Rhine. An active member of the Franco-German University and of the CIERA Research Network, Sciences Po has a total of 27 partner universities in Germany and implements joint actions at all levels of training and research. Thus, Sciences Po offers a bachelor's degree with a European Union Minor – the result of a renowned Franco-German partnership that takes place on the Nancy campus – but also 3 double degrees (with Freie Universität and the Hertie School, who is also a member of CIVICA, the European University of Social Sciences). Lastly, the Alfred Grosser Chair and the AxPo program are a direct result of the successful working relationships that Sciences Po researchers have been building for many years with their German colleagues. Through these areas of cooperation, Sciences Po has established itself as a major university player in the Franco-German relations.
