Une Election somalienne

01/04/2017

Although it took months to reach an agreement on how to carry out the electoral process, elections eventually took place and allowed to renew the Parliament, establish an Upper house and choose a new President. This note analyses the main challenges faced throughout this electoral period and the way corruption played a major role in it. The main outcome is a genuinely new Parliament and the selection of a President who entertains difficult relations with Ethiopia. Consequently, Somali politics is going to be more factionalized, especially at a time the federal states and the national government need to agree on fundamental issues such as wealth sharing and the building of a national Army.
