Sciences Po launches the Chair in Sovereign Debt
The goal of the new Chair in Sovereign Debt, hosted by the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), is to study sovereign financing and debt sustainability. Through the association of debt practitioners and renowned academics, this Chair aims to become an international reference on the issue.
Understanding the challenges of sovereign debt sustainability, such as the need for financing, the nature of debt and the improvement of transparency, has become necessary both to ensure sustainable economic growth and the reduction of inequalities. In a context of historically high levels of public debt, in which the creditors' landscape and the debt structures of emerging sovereigns are constantly changing, the prevention and reduction of sovereign debt vulnerabilities, the coordination of creditors, the definition of a tolerable debt level and resolving debt crises are all crucial challenges. To do this, it seems essential to develop a thorough knowledge of the situations and choices of the last sixty years as well as a profound reflection about the solutions to be achieved tomorrow.
However, no academic reference area had so far been structured in France around issues related to sovereign debt. The purpose of the Chair in Sovereign Debt is to become, through the colloquia it organizes, the teachings it will deliver, and the research and publications that it will support, a renowned resource in France and Europe on sovereign financing.
The Chair was launched on 27 November 2019, with an inaugural lecture by Alexis Tsipras, former Greek Prime Minister, as the guest of honour.
Stéphane Guibaud, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of Sciences Po and a specialist in international finance issues, is the inaugural holder and scientific director of this Chair.
The Chair is funded by the Global Sovereign Advisory.
