“I wanted to make sure my skills were still up to date”
After ten years with General Electric, Megan Carroll wanted to make sure her skills were up to date and relevant to the European market. In September, she enrolled in the one-year Master’s programme in Financial Regulation and Risk Management on the Sciences Po campus in Paris.
Before you enrolled at Sciences Po, you worked for several years at General Electric in the banking sector. Why did you decide to go back to university?
I spent ten years with General Electric, first in leadership programmes and subsequently in Finance and Risk roles in several business units in different places. When GE exited its Capital businesses, I decided to return to university to position myself for future roles. I wanted to make sure my skills were both up to date and relevant to the European market.
Why did you choose Sciences Po for your return to university?
I chose Sciences Po because of its strong reputation in France and Europe and because the one-year Master’s programme allowed me to earn my degree within a reasonable time-frame. I liked that the programme had a strong academic focus but also offered preparation for professional certifications. Additionally, Sciences Po was in my neighbourhood.
What do you expect from this year of study? Which skills do you need to develop?
I expect to develop my knowledge of the current political and macroeconomic environment and of recent or proposed regulations that will impact the banking and financial services sectors. Additionally, this programme will allow me to broaden my expertise beyond that of my prior focus on US regulations.
You started your year at Sciences Po a few months ago. What are your first impressions?
I’m impressed by the diversity of the student body and the course offerings at Sciences Po. The level of academic rigour is both intense and enriching. Especially valuable is the mix of professors, some of whom are world-class researchers and others expert practitioners.
