The complexity of education policies and social inequality
in school systems

Socioeconomic inequality in academic achievement has become a key educational, economic, social, and political issue of the 21st century. Indeed, policymakers around the world are grappling with the persistent challenge of raising the academic attainment of disadvantaged student populations, and to narrow achievement gaps between this group and their more affluent peers. Undoubtedly, enhanced educational outcomes – particularly for disadvantaged students – has important implications for student success and intergenerational mobility.
This presentation discusses key factors that influence the academic resiliency of students from low socioeconomic status (SES) family backgrounds. Particular attention will be devoted to discussing educational policies and practices for at-risk primary student populations that appear to ameliorate achievement gaps. Findings from a recent analysis of socioeconomic disadvantages within England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, United States, Canada, and Australia will be examined.
Louis Volante is Professor of Education at Brock University (Hamilton campus, Ontario, Canada). He is also Professorial Fellow at the United Nations University - MERIT (Maastricht), and President of the Canadian Educational Researchers’ Association (CERA/ACCÉ).
He is currently a Visiting Professor at UCL in Quantitative Social Science (QSS) / Department of Social Science.
Main research topics: education and public policy analysis; international assessments and the politics of education reform; metrics, performance monitoring, and education governance; migrant integration policies and education outcomes; social inequality in education.
