Doctoral students

CRIS' Doctoral program

Supervisor of doctoral training: Martin Aranguren

The CRIS is one of the host research centers for Science Po's Doctoral Program in Sociology.
It is renowned for its commitment to research training and has been pursuing the same goal for 20 years: to train top-notch sociologists capable of analyzing transformations in contemporary societies.

Four guiding principles

  • The doctoral training focuses both on theories and methods, with the dual goal of breaking with scholastic scholastic ways of thinking and encouraging practical expertise in various avenues of sociological investigation
  • It places great importance on implementing cross-national comparisons, in order to improve our understanding and explanation of social change
  • It offers an extensive range of fields of specialization: education, urban and rural areas, social inequalities, intergenerational relationships, lifestyles and cultural practices, migrations, etc.
  • It gives students the role of researchers-in-training and allows them to participate in research programs led by established researchers with taking full part in the intellectual life of the center

Seminars

Doctoral students must complete at least 90 hours of course work during their first three years. Participation in the first three seminars listed below is mandatory for students studying in the Doctoral program in sociology associated with the CRIS.

  • The Scientific Seminar
  • The Doctoral Seminar (Current sociology research, led by Emanuele Ferragina)
. This seminar provides an overview of recent influential advances in sociological research and provides practical training to conduct researches and write papers.
  • Thesis workshop (“Conduite du travail de thèse”)
, organized by the doctoral students themselves
  • Thematic seminars offered as part of the PhD curriculum
  • Other seminars: with the permission of their PhD supervisor or the chair of the doctoral program, doctoral students may take classes and seminars offered at other institutions. These credits may be transferable

The CRIS members teach a wide variety of classes.
