The economic penalty of terrorism for Arab/Muslim
hosts on Airbnb Paris

The growth of the sharing economy has initiated a massive increase of economic transactions on online peer-to-peer platforms. Many such platforms depend on buyers and sellers revealing personal information to facilitate exchanges with the unintended consequence that the information may become a source for discrimination. We show evidence of substantial discrimination against Arab/Muslim guests and hosts in Airbnb’s online rental market in Paris, France. In addition, discriminatory
practices increased substantially and durably in response to large-scale, deadly terrorist attacks in November 2015. Rental properties of hosts with Arab/Muslim names lost more guests than those of French-named hosts, incurring an overall economic penalty of over 3 million US dollars.
