The Crisis of Globalization as We Know It
About this event
From 05 March 2021 14:00 to 06 March 2021 03:59
The Global Public Policy Network (GPPN) Virtual Annual Conference (March 4th-6th) will focus this year on the theme “The Crisis of Globalization as We Know It” and on creating an innovative solution to a public policy challenge.
Friday, March 5, 1pm (Paris time). Plenary Session#1 – Deans’ Roundtable:
“Digitalisation, Digital Governance, and the Transformation of Public Policy Education”
This roundtable intends to discuss the future of public policy education in light of the increasing digitalisation of governance tools and of society in general. The great acceleration of digitalisation as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, but also of the shift towards a new vision of society and the economy, particularly in terms of decarbonization and effort to fight the ongoing global environmental crisis, point to a future where new competencies and skills will be required to successfully operate as a public policy specialist.
Speakers:
- Yann Algan, Dean, Sciences Po School of Public Affairs
- Mark Hallerberg, Acting President, Hertie School of Governance
- Merit E. Janow, Dean of SIPA, Columbia University
- Hiroshi Ohashi, Dean, Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP), the University of Tokyo
- Danny Quah, Dean , LKY School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore

Saturday, March 6, 1am (Paris time). Plenary Session#2 – Keynote Series:
- 1. “The Crisis of Globalization?” by Bilahari Kausikan, Chairman, Middle East Institute, National University of Singapore.
The question mark in the title is intended to be the point of the talk. ‘Crisis’ is an emotionally charged but carelessly over-used term. Globalisation is certainly under stress, but is it in ‘crisis’? What do we mean by ‘crisis’? The talk will explore these and other related questions.
- 2. “From Polarity to Universality: Reflections on Storytelling Globally” by Yumi Araki, Multiplatform storyteller and journalist with experience in print, video, and radio
Rapid globalization has shaped the way we tell stories – whether in academia, policy memos, or in the media. These narratives can often be quick to compare and contrast and underscore the differences that exist in our world. But what if there was another way?
