Alejandro Poiré, a Mexican national, holds a PhD in Political Science from Harvard University, and a Bachelor’s degree in the same field from Mexico’s Autonomous Technological Institute (ITAM), where he has been a professor and the Political Science Department Chair. Mr. Poiré has published several academic pieces analyzing public opinion, campaign dynamics and voting behavior in Mexico, and has been a visiting researcher and lecturer at several institutions in the USA, including MIT, and Latin America. Noteworthy arehis contributions to publications on Mexico’s democratic process, including: Towards Mexico’s Democratization: Parties, Campaigns, Elections, and Public Opinion and Mexico’s Pivotal Democratic Election.
Currently, he is Dean of the Graduate School of Public Administration of the Tec de Monterrey University. He is also co-founder of Mexico Crece, a social enterprise for delivering entrepreneurship skills to Mexican youth.
On November 17th, 2012, President Felipe Calderón appointed him Minister of the Interior. In October 2011, he also served as the Head of Mexico´s National Security and Inteligence Center. Prior to this position, President Felipe Calderón appointed him Secretary of the National Security Council and Cabinet. He has also held the position of State Deputy Secretary for Population, Migration and Religious Affairs, at the Ministry of Interior, where he had been serving as Chief of Staff and Lead Adviser to the Minister since November 2008. From 2007 to 2008, Mr. Poiré Romero was Director of Political Analysis in the Office ofPresident Felipe Calderon, and was then designated Commissionerfor Political Development at the Ministry of Interior.
Mr. Poire Romero was adviser to the National Institute of Statistics on the creation of the first National Survey on Political Culture and Citizenship Practices (2001). Between 2003 to 2005, he was a senior official in Mexico’s Electoral Institute (IFE), the independent electoral management body that organizes Mexico’s elections. Mr. Poiré Romero’s specific job was to enforce the laws on political parties, which include disbursement and auditing of their public finance.
