Research meets Politics - European Sovereignty at a turning point: Franco-German Perspectives
About this event
27 June 2022 from 14:00 until 19:00
Online
After two years of online presence, “Research meets Politics” is back for a hybrid edition. This event brings together high-level German and French representatives from the economic and political spheres, from research and civil society, and aims to develop the dialogue between France and Germany, two countries playing a decisive role in the future of the EU.
The Russian attack of Ukraine is putting pressure on the sovereignty of the European Union and accelerating efforts to strengthen the EU as a player in the international arena. With a Franco-German perspective, we will get input by Anna Lührmann, Deputy Minister for European Affairs and Climate, Clément Beaune, Minister Delegate for Europe at the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and Valérie Hayer, MEP and co-chair of the Renaissance EU delegation. Also present will be Serap Güler, member of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Ischinger, Senior Professor at the Hertie School, Cornelia Woll, President of the Hertie School and Philippe Martin, Sciences Po professor and President delegate of French Council of Economic Analysis, as well as many other high-level participants.
During this event, the experts discuss the main challenges posed by this war in Europe. How can the member states decouple themselves economically from Russia and cushion the costs for their countries? How must European security policy position itself in the future, and what role should NATO play in this? Finally, we also dare to look ahead to upcoming years to ask what exactly France and Germany must initiate to strengthen European sovereignty and be prepared for the future.
