Nuremberg Trials, 75th Anniversary

In treating the Nuremberg Trials, for which the 75th anniversary has just been commemorated, and which provided the beginnings of international criminal justice, this webinar will provide an opportunity for a better understanding of two concepts: “Genocide” and “Crime Against Humanity”, through the book authored by Philippe Sands, “Retour à Lemberg”.
Guest speakers:
- Philippe Sands will present his book “Retour à Lemberg” published in France in 2017. The original book “East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity” (2016) was translated worldwide and awarded the Baillie Gifford Prize 2016 and designated Best Book of the Year at the 2017 British Book Awards.
A French-British International lawyer, specialising in the defense of Human Rights, Philippe Sands is also Professor of Laws at the University College of London. Specialist in International Law, he appears as advocate and counsel before many international courts and tribunals, including the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, and the International Criminal Court (which he helped establish).
- Astrid von Busekist, University Professor of Political Science, editor-in-chief of the review Raisons politiques.
Astrid von Busekist is also a researcher associated with the International Research Centre of Sciences Po (CERI) and Professor at Sciences Po. She provided the French translation of “Retour à Lemberg“.
- Dr Viviane Dittrich, Deputy Director of the International Nuremburg Principles Academy.
She is also guest researcher at the Centre for International Studies of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Drawing on extensive field research, her work comparatively investigates the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, the Special Court for Sierra Leone, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the International Criminal Court, and the International Military Tribunal (Nuremberg).
A graduate of Sciences Po and former student of the Campus in Nancy, Dr. Dittrich possesses a vast array of experience at numerous institutions including LSE, Royal Holloway and Sciences Po, teaching the Politics of International Law, World Criminality, International Institutions, and American Foreign Policy.
