In the Soekarno period, especially in 1952-1965, South Sulawesi was one of the strong bases of the Islamic rebellion against the central government of Indonesia. Yet, since the Soeharto period, it has become the strongest regional basis of power for the nationalist party, Golkar. After the fall of Soeharto in 1998, an Islamic ideologically oriented group established the Preparatory Committee for the Implementation of Shari’a (KPPSI). With the rise of democracy, the socio-political forces are free to support or oppose the KPPSI agenda. The success and failure of the KPPSI and its compromises with the political realities illustrate the dynamics of Islam and democracy in Indonesia.
