Halving it all. How couples around the world create equality

About this event

26 February 2020 from 18:00 until 20:00

Francine M. Deutsch, Professor Emerita of Psychology, Mount Holyoke College (Massachusetts), will present her forthcoming book, Creating Equality at Home: How 25 Couples around the World Share Housework and Childcare.
Marta Dominguez Folgueras, Director of Sciences Po’s Department of Sociology and Associate Professor at OSC-Sciences Po, will  initiate a discussion.
Creating Equality at Home tells the fascinating stories of couples around the world today who are thwarting social norms and achieving equality. Their everyday decisions about who cooks the food, washes the dishes, diapers the baby, helps with homework, and whose career is compromised to make time for family life, add up to a gender revolution.
Often driven by either what they admired or rejected in their own mothers and fathers, these couples reject the prescription that men’s identities are determined by paid work, and women’s by motherhood. They show that men can put family first and are as capable of nurturing as women, and that women can pursue careers as seriously as their husbands do.
Equally-sharing couples go beyond lip service to gender equality by building a new kind of family. They demonstrate that equality can provide profound rewards for men, women, marriage, and children.
