Roland Marchal released from Iran after 9 months of wrongful imprisonment
Roland Marchal, CNRS researcher at the Sciences Po Centre for International Studies and Research (CERI) who had been imprisoned in Iran since early June 2019, was finally released on March 20, 2020. On March 21, 2020, he returned to Paris where he was reunited with his family.
Roland Marchal was incarcerated in June 2019 along with colleague and partner, Fariba Adelkhah, who remains incarcerated at Evin Prison in the north of Tehran. Over the last eight months, a Support Committee made up of colleagues of the CERI and fellow academics has been pressing for their release.
Roland Marchal’s release is cause for immense joy and a great relief to the Sciences Po community.
During these months, colleagues and researchers around Europe have been protesting against the unjustified imprisonment of our two researchers, Fariba Adelkhah and Roland Marchal. Many events have taken place in support of their release and to spread awareness on this intolerable attack on academic freedom.
Sciences Po will not stop calling for the release of Fariba Adelkhah, and we will not be able to celebrate in full until both of our colleagues have been freed.
