La bibliothèque de Sciences Po, en partenariat avec le CERI, organise une discussion à trois voix consacrée aux représentations artistiques de la mort en migration et aux formes de dialogue possibles entre recherche et création.

Cette discussion réunira Thomas Lacroix, géographe politiste au CERI (Sciences Po) et Judith Misrahi-Barak, spécialiste de littérature post-coloniale au laboratoire EMMA, (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3), co‑responsables du projet Thanatic Ethics: the circulation of bodies in migration, ainsi que Gaspard Njock, artiste et auteur de bande dessinée.

En croisant sciences sociales et pratiques artistiques, ils exploreront la manière dont les arts donnent forme à l’expérience de la mort en migration. Ils s’intéresseront également aux rapports aux corps avant, pendant et après le parcours migratoire – à leurs  silences, leurs  absences et leurs  mémoires.

La discussion s’appuiera sur un projet de constitution de base de données bibliographiques mené avec la Bibliothèque et référençant œuvres littéraires, bandes dessinées et créations artistiques. 

La table ronde sera suivie d’une séance de dédicace. Le même jour, à 19h00, le film Green Border de la réalisatrice Agnieszka Holland sera projeté au cinéma l’Entrepôt dans le cadre du Ciné-club du CERI. 

Biographies des intervenants 

Gaspard Njock est un artiste multidisciplinaire, éditeur chez Sofia Comics et doctorant en musicologie à l’université de la Sorbonne. Sa thèse porte sur la relation entre l’image et le son dans la scénographie des opéras de Richard Wagner. Parmi ses œuvres artistiques, il a publié en 2024 le roman graphique Au-delà l’exil avec Félicien de Heusch, en 2021 le documentaire en bande dessinée Mauvaises Aires, en 2018 Un voyage sans retour, une docu-fiction à l’aquarelle sur le drame de la migration et en 2015, avec Andrea Aprile, Aldo Manuzio, un roman graphique sur les origines de l’imprimerie. 

Judith Misrahi-Barak est professeure émérite en études postcoloniales à l’Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry. Membre du laboratoire EMMA, ses principaux domaines de spécialisation sont les littératures caribéennes et indo- et sino-caribéennes anglophones, les écritures diasporiques et migrantes, ainsi que les littératures dalit. Elle est rédactrice en chef de la série PoCoPages (Coll. Horizons anglophones, Pulm). Elle est impliquée dans plusieurs projets de recherche collaborative tels que “Kala Pani Crossings”, “Dalit and Adivasi Literatures and Performing Arts” ou “Thanatic Ethics”.

Thomas Lacroix est géographe, directeur de recherche au CNRS affilié au Centre de Recherches Internationales de Sciences Po. Il travaille sur les relations entre le transnationalisme des immigrés et l'Etat. Il a publié de nombreux ouvrages et articles sur la mémoire diasporique, la géographie morale de la migration ou la théorie du transnationalisme. Il est directeur adjoint du programme Thanatic Ethic: the circulation of bodies in migratory spaces.

Confronting the unspeakable: depicting death in migration through the arts and social sciences.

The Sciences Po Library is organising a panel discussion in partnership with CERI. The focus of the discussion will be on artistic representations of death in the context of migration, and the potential for dialogue between social sciences research and creative practice.

This discussion will bring together Thomas Lacroix and Judith Misrahi-Barak, the co-leaders of the project Thanatic Ethics: The Circulation of Bodies in Migration. Thomas is a geographer and political scientist at CERI (Sciences Po), while Judith is a specialist in postcolonial literature at the EMMA research unit at Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 University. Gaspard Njock, an artist and comic-book author will be joining the discussion.

Bringing together the social sciences and artistic practices, they will explore how the arts shape the experience of death in migration. They will also examine relationships with the human bodies before, during and after the migration journey – their  silences, their absences and their memories.

The discussion will draw on a project to create a bibliographic database in collaboration with the Sciences Po Library, cataloguing literary works, comic books and artistic creations. 

The round-table discussion will be followed by a book-signing session. On the same day, at 7:00 pm, the film Green Border by director Agnieszka Holland will be screened at the L'Entrepôt cinema as part of the CERI cinéclub. 

Biographies of speakers

Gaspard Njock is a multidisciplinary artist, editor at Sofia Comics and PhD candidate in Musicology at La Sorbonne University. His thesis focuses on the relationship between image and sound in the scenography of Richard Wagner's operas. Among his artistic works, he published the graphic novel Au-delà l’exil with Félicien de Heusch in 2024 , the comics documentary “Mauvaises Aires” in 2021; “Un voyage sans retour”, a watercolor docu-fiction, around the drama of migration in 2018, and with Andrea Aprile “Aldo Manuzio”, a graphic novel around the origin of printing, in 2015. 

Judith Misrahi-Barak is Professor Emerita of Postcolonial Studies at the University of Montpellier Paul-Valéry. A member of the EMMA research group, her main areas of specialisation are English-language Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean and Sino-Caribbean literatures, diasporic and migrant writing, and Dalit literatures. She is editor-in-chief of the PoCoPages series (Horizons anglophones collection, Pulm). She is involved in several collaborative research projects such as “Kala Pani Crossings”, “Dalit and Adivasi Literatures and Performing Arts” and “Thanatic Ethics”.

Thomas Lacroix is a geographer, research director at the CNRS, affiliated with the Centre for International Research at Sciences Po. His work focuses on the relationship between immigrants’ transnationalism and the State. He has published numerous books and articles on diasporic memory, the moral geography of migration and the theory of transnationalism. He is deputy director of the programme ‘Thanatic Ethic: the circulation of bodies in migratory spaces’.
