Publication of the Ruhr study trip report

THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF THE MASTER IN REGIONAL AND URBAN STRATEGY WENT TO THE RUHR, FROM 12 TO 16 NOVEMBER 2019, FOR A STUDY TRIP. THEIR TRAVEL REPORT HAS JUST BEEN RELEASED.

The Ruhr is an industrial and urban space located in the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the west of Germany.

>The challenges of this trip were to understand the evolution of the IBA model (international exhibition of architecture) but also to understand the local changes, in terms of governance of the Ruhr, in terms of demographic change, economic change and ecological transition.

At the end of this stay, many elements of response were brought to the initial questions by the actors met and the observations made on the spot. New questions are also raised, perhaps linked to our French-speaking outlook, such as that of gentrification, of a renewal of the economic fabric to the detriment of certain populations, more fragile and poorly qualified, the importance given to private companies in the definition and implementation of urban projects. In short, the question arises of the Ruhr’s metropolitan strategy and the emphasis on its specificities, in a context of intermetropolitan competition and very strong local economic, social and ecological stakes.
