Two researchers from Sciences Po awarded ERC Grants

Jonne Bartus Kamphorst, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Socio-Political Data (CDSP) and the Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics (CEE), and Johanna Gautier-Morin, a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for the Sociology of Organisations (CSO), have each been awarded an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant by the European Research Council.

These prestigious grants support research projects recognised for their excellence and innovative nature. Since the European Research Council was established in 2007, 41 projects led by researchers affiliated with Sciences Po have been selected.

Understanding the Roots of Contemporary Political Divides

Jonne Kamphorst has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant for his project, “Losing Beats Winning: Symmetry and Asymmetry in the Effects of Economic Experiences on Anti-Establishment Attitudes”.

His project examines the effects of economic trajectories on political attitudes, with a particular focus on the roots of contemporary political divides. Using quantitative methods, he will seek to better understand how certain experiences contribute to anti-establishment attitudes and how citizens could be re-engaged in political life.

The project will also explore the potential of large language models for research methods, notably to simulate different forms of behaviour and improve our understanding of electoral attitudes.

Rethinking the History of the Environment in the Global Economy

Johanna Gautier-Morin has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant for her project, “Inventing the Environment: An Intellectual History of Accounting for Nature in the Global Economy (1930s–2010s)”.

At the intersection of intellectual history, economic history, environmental studies and political economy, her project examines how the concept of the “environment” was gradually incorporated into analyses of the global economy.

Johanna seeks to trace the history of how international accounting systems have modelled the environment, and to rethink the history of prosperity, value and planetary boundaries.
