Sciences Po Launches the “Conférence” Website
Sciences Po is launching Conférence, a website that sheds light on public debate through the lens of the humanities and social sciences. Conférence aims to make knowledge accessible to as many people as possible, to provide perspective for understanding current events, and to open up new outlooks for building the future.
Our strength: a community of experts
Conférence draws on the rich diversity of our community. Teachers, researchers, and practitioners share knowledge rooted in their research, professional lives, or field experience. Conférence is an intellectual ecosystem.
It does not speak on behalf of the institution: it gives voice to the diversity of voices that shape Sciences Po.
5 key themes and many formats
The content you will find on Conférence focuses on five themes that are essential to our institution:
- Europe
- Conflict
- Democracy
- Environment
- Technology
These are all areas in which the humanities and social sciences can provide tools for understanding, fuel debate, and sometimes even suggest action.
To make knowledge accessible to each and every one, the platform offers various formats to reach a wide and curious audience: videos, podcasts, interviews, articles, book excerpts… but also academic formats specific to the institution: cartography, grandes conférences, and the Fondamental video series.
Why choose the word “Conférence”? This ancient French word embodies the very spirit of our project. In Richelet's Dictionnaire françois (1680), a conference is “a dispute between learned people on some thorny issue”. It inherits the medieval tradition of disputatio, a rigorous and demanding dialogue between opposing ideas.
In the 18th century, the conference became a forum for the expression of knowledge: a lesson, a speech, a dissertation. Even today, this word resonates daily on the Sciences Po campuses: methodology conferences, grandes conférences, all formats that embody the articulation of debate and transmission.
Sources, open access to all knowledge produced at Sciences Po
Alongside Conférence, the Sources platform offers an in-depth look at the wide range of academic output produced at Sciences Po.
Designed as a tool for the open dissemination of knowledge and support for teaching, it has two objectives: to broaden access to the institution's archives and to encourage learning, regardless of the visitor's level of curiosity or expertise.
