“Disability is a Cross-Cutting Issue”: Anne Revillard on Contemporary Disability Rights

In this sociological perspective on disability rights, Anne Revillard, professor of Sociology at the Observatoire Sociologique du Changement and director of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public Policies, discusses some of the challenges that people with disabilities encounter in our society.

From the fight for social rights to movement in public spaces, the burden often falls to disabled people themselves to ensure that they have the same access to education, employment, and services as people without disabilities. The actions they take often include forms of personal protest, efforts to educate their teachers, peers, and employers, as well as the assertion of their rights on a legal level.

In the society we currently live in, individuals are obliged to take these steps to ensure their inclusion, yet according to Anne Revillard, we are beginning to see a fundamental change in the conversation surrounding questions of disability, much like that observed in the 20th century with women’s rights. As she notes, “This change is reflected in those rights being claimed and affirmed.” As we continue to follow this wave of change, collective protest and public policy, in addition to the actions of individuals already underway, will remain essential to moving toward a truly inclusive society.
