His Excellency John KUFUOR was president of Ghana from 2000 to 2009. Under his leadership, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to cut in half the proportion of its people who suffer from hunger as well as the proportion of people living on less than a dollar per day, making significant strides towards the achievement of UN Millennium Development Goal 1 – Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger – before the 2015 deadline. During his presidency, Mr. Kufuor also served as chairman of the Economic Community of West African states for two terms (2003-2005) and as chairperson of the African Union (2007-2008). He currently serves as the World Food Programme Ambassador of the UN against Hunger, Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Special Envoy on behalf of the Sabin Vaccine Institute/Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, and is a member or director of numerous boards, including the Netherlands Development Cooperation, Brenthurst Foundation of South Africa, and Leon Sullivan Foundation in the United States.
