“The future of Europe. What lies ahead?” by Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s Federal Minister of Finance

Multiple crises have been occurring within the Eurozone since 2008, with serious effects not only on European economies but also on the internal cohesion of the EU as a whole. 25 years after the reunification, German economy is the strongest and the steadiest in Europe. Is it pertinent to say this position gives Germany a “special responsibility” as a leading force of the European integration? More generally, what is Germany’s vision of the future of Europe?

 

Wolfgang Schäuble has been Germany’s Federal Minister of Finance since 2009. Member of the Christian Democratic Union party (CDU), he held several positions in Helmut Kohl’s government from 1984 to 1991 and served as Federal Minister of the Interior from 1989 to 1991 and from 2005 to 2009.

Wolfgang Schäuble has authored several books about politics, amongst which The Treaty: How I Conducted the Negotiations on German Unification (1991) and Future of Moderation: What we Can Learn from the Crisis (2009). He  studied law and economics at the universities of Freiburg and Hamburg.
