Syria: International Crimes with Impunity. A Conversation with the United Nations Syria Commission of Inquiry
About this event
22 May 2019 from 19:00 until 21:00
The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic was established on 22 August 2011 by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Its mandate is to investigate all alleged human rights and humanitarian law violations in the Syria conflict since March 2011, to establish the facts and circumstances of such violations, and to identify the perpetrators whenever possible so as to support efforts to hold them accountable. The Human rights Council recently extended the mandate of the Commission to March 31, 2020.
On the occasion of their next visit to Paris, the three Commissioners, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro (Chair), Karen Koning Abuzayd (founding member) and Hanny Megally, present the challenges faced by the Commission and in a question-and-answer session chaired by Eberhard Kienle (Sciences Po – CERI) discuss their mandate, the approach they are taking and the impact of their work.
Speakers: Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, Karen Koning Abuzayd, and Hanny Megally.
Moderator: Eberhard Kienle
