Intensified rivalry, most notably in the form of the Russian-Ukrainian war and China-Taiwan tensions, serve to raise many questions about the current state of the world order.

Thinking back to the joint statement of Presidents Xi and Putin in February 2022 announcing a “new era” in international relations, one is minded to ask: How should we interpret their announcement? What has this push for global realignment meant so far? Have Russia and China become true strategic allies, or have they remained mere partners of convenience? What challenges will Russia and China have to face in their efforts to set the international agenda?

A discussion with:

  • Isabelle Facon, Deputy Director, Foundation for Strategic Research
  • Marc Julienne, Head of China Research, Center for Asian Studies, French Institute of International Relations

Moderated by:

  • Jérôme Doyon, Junior Professor, Center for International Relations (CERI), PSIA faculty member
