Ten years after clean energy was integrated into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the decarbonisation of the energy sector stands at a crossroads. While the rollout of renewable energy is gaining momentum worldwide, geopolitical shifts, resource constraints, and industrial challenges are reshaping the pathway toward sustainable, secure, and affordable energy sources.

In this context, the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) is delighted to host the first day of the Paris Energy Week with a panel on the geopolitcs of energy and the presentation of the World Energy Outlook 2025, the flagship report of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Program

15:00 - 15:30 Welcome & Opening remarks

15:30 - 17:00 Geopolitics of energy

The panel will explore how global decarbonisation is reshaping geopolitics and redefining energy security. As countries accelerate the transition toward electrification, renewable energy, hydrogen, and mineral-intensive clean technologies, the balance of geopolitical power is shifting. New strategic dependencies are emerging — from critical mineral supply chains to advanced battery manufacturing and global hydrogen trade routes — while old dependencies on fossil fuels decline unevenly and sometimes chaotically.

With:

  • Pedro Brancante, Head of Energy & Mining Affairs, Embassy of Brazil in Paris
  • Henning Gloystein, Managing Director and Energy & Resources Senior Fellow, Eurasia Group
  • Michal Meidan, Director of the China Energy Programme, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies;  Scientific Advisor for the Master in International Energy Transitions, PSIA, Sciences Po
  • Moderated by Thibaut Voita, Sustainability Partnerships Facilitator & Decarbonization Policy Expert, Jacques Delors Institute and EM Lyon

17:00 - 18:30 World Energy Outlook 2025

This year’s edition of the World Energy Outlook comes amid major shifts in global energy policies and markets, and acute geopolitical strains. Governments are reaching different conclusions about the best ways to tackle concerns about energy security, affordability and sustainability. An important theme in the 2025 Outlook is security of supply of critical minerals.

The flagship report of International Energy Agency highlights how governments, industries, and societies can navigate the complex interplay of energy security, economic development, and environmental responsibility in the decade ahead.

With:

  • Tim Gould, Chief Energy Economist, International Energy Agency
  • Marc Ringel, Chairholder at the European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition, Sciences Po
  • Christine Le Bihan-Graf, Associée, Hogan Lovells (Paris), LLP
  • Isabelle Kocher de Leyritz, Chairman & CEO Blunomy; former CEO, ENGIE
  • Moderated by Denis Florin, Chair of the Group Energy and Infrastructure, Sciences Po Alumni
