Humanitarian Crises in 2024: How To Protect The Most Vulnerable And Break The Cycle?
About this event
31 January 2024 from 17:30 until 19:00
Jacques Chapsal Amphitheatre
27 rue Saint-Guillaume, 75007, ParisEvery year, millions of people are affected and displaced by conflict and disasters worldwide. 2024 promises more suffering. Who are the world’s most vulnerable and what can the global community do to help them?
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) produces a yearly Emergency Watchlist which reports on the 20 countries most at risk of worsening humanitarian need. This year’s report is topped by Sudan, the occupied Palestinian territory, and South Sudan.
To mark the Watchlist’s publication, IRC Vice President Harlem Désir provided an overview of the flagship report, which helps the IRC determine where to focus its emergency preparedness efforts. The Committee’s recommendations on how to break the cycle of crisis in the countries listed was also explored.
A Q&A session, chaired by Anne Charbord, international Human rights lawyer and PSIA faculty member, provided students the opportunity to engage with Mr Désir’s analysis of the shocking human misery unfolding globally.
