Democracies today face challenges that cut across borders. The rise of digital platforms, deepening social polarization, and declining trust in representative institutions are reshaping public opinion and testing the foundations of contemporary democracy.
This discussion will explore the political and cultural transformations taking place in digitally mediated societies by taking Chile as a case study - from the 2019 social uprising to the recent constitutional processes. Former minister Giorgio Jackson and sociologist Sylvain Parasie will discuss how social media shapes political legitimacy and the role that algorithms play in fueling polarization, before exploring possibilities for new forms of democratic deliberation.  The audience will also be invited to consider: How can we strengthen democracy in an interconnected world?

With:

  • Giorgio Jackson, former Minister of Social Development of Chile
  • Sylvain Parasie, Scientific Director, Médialab Sciences Po
