Argentina’s Predicament: Analysis and Perspectives

After yet another default on its external debt, and despite reaching a restructuring agreement over the summer, Argentina’s economy is still in distress territory.
The panel discussion will focus on the country’s near- to medium-term outlook, in a context of high uncertainty regarding the policy plans of the Fernandez administration. The distinguished speakers participating in the panel are:

  • Lee Buchheit, veteran sovereign debt lawyer, formerly a Senior Partner at Cleary Gottlieb. Over his legendary career, he worked on the debt restructurings of more than two dozen countries.
  • Gaspard Estrada, political scientist, Executive Director of the Political Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean (Sciences Po Center for International Studies). He is also an adjunct faculty at Sciences Po and other universities.
  • Daniel Marx, former Secretary of Finance of Argentina, he is currently Executive Director of Quantum Finanzas, a financial services firm in Argentina. He is also a professor of International Finance at the Universidad de San Andrés.
  • Reza Moghadam, Chief Economic Adviser at Morgan Stanley and a former director of the International Monetary Fund’s European Department.
  • Alejandro Werner, head of the Western Hemisphere Division of the IMF. Mr. Werner had distinguished careers in the public and private sectors as well as in academia, and previously served as Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico.

Moderation by Elena Daly, Senior Adviser at Global Sovereign Advisory and adjunct faculty at Sciences Po, and Stéphane Guibaud, Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and Scientific Director of Sciences Po’s Chair in Sovereign Debt.
