The Strength of Neutrality in International Diplomacy: Our Dual Degree in Switzerland

On 15 March 2024, many of the 250 graduates from Sciences Po's Dual Degree with the University of St.Gallen were invited to the Swiss Embassy to celebrate the 20 years of this one of a kind programme.

Watch our video recap of this landmark partnership.

A high-level and flexible dual degree

This partnership between Sciences Po and the University of St.Gallen – the highest-ranked business school in Switzerland, and among the best in Europe – was launched in 2004. Every year, 20 to 25 students are chosen to be part of the only Franco-Swiss Master's dual degree in the field of international diplomacy.

During their first year at Sciences Po, the students can select among 11 Master's programmes from the Paris School of International Affairs, the School of Public Affairs and event the School of Management and Impact, which makes their academic journey very flexible. Their second year takes place at University of St.Gallen where they follow the Master in International Affairs.

A look back on a 20-years academic endeavour

Daniela Engelmann, Executive Director of the Master’s International Affairs and Governance at the University of St.Gallen, has been working on this Dual Degree since its beginning. Read below her take on this academic partnership.

The Dual Degrees are a highlight of our Master’s in International Affairs and Governance (MIA) – and the Dual Degree with Sciences Po has a special place amongst them, with Sciences Po being one of our most important international partners. This year, Sciences Po and the University of St.Gallen (HSG) look back at 20 years of successfully managing their Dual Degree together. This collaboration has been a landmark in the internationalisation history of the University of St.Gallen, as the programme with Sciences Po was once the first of its kind for HSG. And today, it is still its most substantial dual degree, having generated more than 250 graduates to date.

Since 20 years, this programme has been a great asset for HSG in general and for the MIA programme in particular, and even more so for many ambitious and talented students, who were able to study at two outstanding universities in two different countries, who could benefit from both Sciences Po’s and HSG’s respective strengths, who were able to customise their degrees in International Affairs and who can now access two important alumni networks.

A milestone of this dual degree has been the open recruitment and direct application process which we implemented ten years ago – a change to which Sciences Po had to nudge us at first. This innovation has since lifted our joint programme to new levels in terms of quantity and quality of applications as well as international diversity of applicants. This dual degree has become highly attractive and competitive, with more than a hundred applications each year for about 20 places.

We are extremely thankful to our colleagues at Sciences Po for the exceptionally productive and trusting collaboration during the past 20 years. And, of course, to our marvelous alumni for making us so proud! Dual Degree graduates today pursue careers as entrepreneurs and in private corporations such as Zurich Insurance, Moody’s and Google, in the public sector like the Assemblée Nationale, Interpol and the Swiss Development Agency, and in International Organisations such as the European Union, UNEP and the OECD. It’s particularly moving to see that so many alumni from the first cohorts have joined our celebrations on 15 March, thus paying tribute to this wonderful cooperation.

An event to learn and network

The participants of this 20-years event were gathered to share and discuss with fellow graduates and academic staff members. The ceremony was launched by Dr. Roberto Balzaretti, Ambassador of Switzerland in France, Dr. Ulrike Franke, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, Dr. Peter Lindstrom, Dean of International Engagement at the University of St.Gallen, and Marie Azuelos, Acting Vice-President of International Affairs at Sciences Po.

A roundtable on “The Geopolitics of the Green Transition” took place with Arancha González Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA, Sciences Po), Rolf Wüstenhagen, Professor of Management of Sustainable Energy (University of St.Gallen), Charlotte Halpern, Director of the Institute for Environmental Transitions (Sciences Po), Christoph Frei, Professor of International Relations (University of St.Gallen) and Elsa Massoc, Professor of International Political Economy (University of St.Gallen).
