U.S. Elections: Domestic and Foreign Policy Challenges on the way to the White House

The 2016 presidential election will be particularly dominated by domestic affairs. The future president will need to tackle a host of domestic policy issues currently polarizing the American society.

Apart from these domestic issues, U.S. foreign policy faces a number of immediate and strategic challenges: a strident Russia, a rising China, a less secure Europe, and a shifting global economic landscape. From day one, the new U.S. president will be presented with critical foreign policy choices.

 

To what extent the results of the 2016 presidential elections will influence U.S. power projection in the world and commitment to Europe’s security? Which place the candidates will give to the domestic issues in their campaign and debates? What kind of economic solutions will the candidates propose?

With guest speakers:

 

– Margaret Carlson, Journalist, Bloomberg View columnist, a former White House correspondent for Time and a former CNN contributor.

– Mario Del Pero, Professor of History at Sciences Po.

– Daniel W. Drezner, Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a contributor to the Washington Post.

– Steven Erlanger, Journalist, London bureau Chief for the New York Times. Prior to this position, Erlanger spent five years as bureau Chief in Paris, and four years as bureau Chief in Jerusalem.

 

The panel discussions will be moderated by Karen Donfried, President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and Enrico Letta, Dean of the Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA).
