“Beijing, Tiananmen, 1989 : A prefiguration of the « Occupy » Movement? A testimony by Wang Dan, Student Leader of the 1989 pro-Democracy Movement”

With guest speaker Wang Dan, Chinese history professor at National Tsinghua University, in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Chair : Jean-Philippe Béjà, Emeritus Research Fellow,  Sciences Po-CERI, CNRS.

Wang Dan is addressing the crowd in Tiananmen Square with a headband marked with jueshi characters (hunger strike), grabbing a megaphone, his eyes hidden behind tortoiseshell glasses.

The image of this twenty-year-old student has become a symbol of the immense popular movement that shook the Chinese Communist Party in the spring of 1989.

Enrolled in the second year of a history degree at the prestigious Beida (Peking University), this son of a professor has become one of the main spokespersons of a movement for democracy, whose viewers around the world have followed the evolution with passion.

A brilliant student, he had created in 1988 the Democratic Salon of Beida which had become a hotbed of discussions on the democratization of China. Those discussions lead to the ignition of debates among the younger generation.

Today, Wang Dan has a Ph.D in history from Harvard University. He presently teaches Chinese history at National Tsinghua University, in Hsinchu, Taiwan
