Filip Kostelka (2015), Professor and Chair in Political and Social Change at the European University Institute

Filip Kostelka defended his dissertation on voter turnout in post-communist democracies, supervised by Nonna Mayer, in 2015. After having worked as Academic Assistant at the College of Europe in Bruges (2014), he started a post-doc at the Research Chair in Electoral Studies at the University of Montreal in 2016. In Canada, he coordinated the international research project Making Electoral Democracy Work under the lead of André Blais. He subsequently started a second postdoc in the Institutions and Political Economy Research Group (IPERG) at the University of Barcelona. During that time, he worked on the European Research Council project “Birth of Party Democracy” under the supervision of Carles Boix. Between 2019 and 2021, he worked as Lecturer (Assistant Professor) and Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of Government at the University of Essex. From 2022, he is Professor and Chair in Political and Social Change in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute while on academic leave from the University of Essex. His research on political behaviour, political parties, and democratisation has been published in journals such as the American Political Science ReviewBritish Journal of Political ScienceComparative Political Studies, or World Politics, and has won several French and international scientific prizes.
