Wed, 2018-09-19 17:00 - 19:00
Seminar Cities are back in town "The impact of national policies for growth and cohesion on regional and local disparities in Italy"
Wednesday 19 September 2018, 5 - 7 pm, Sciences Po, LIEPP’s Conference Room, 254 boulevard Saint-Germain, 75007 Paris
The presentation focuses on the recent transformations of the Italian model of political economy at a national level and on the impact that these transformations had at the local level. In particular, we will focus on two families of policies, policies for cohesion and policies for competitiveness. As for the latter, we will see that national policies for territorial competitiveness have always been poorly developed in Italy, with some more recent exceptions. Until the end of the 1990s the weaknesses of policies for competitiveness was not a relevant problem, but since the beginning of the 2000s this feature triggered a strong reorganization of local development models. As for social cohesion policies, the focus on financial sustainability of the welfare system weakened the social security system especially in the less dynamic regions.
