PSIA welcomes Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz for Fireside Chat on Economics

On Friday, 3 October, the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) at Sciences Po had the distinct honour of hosting Professor Joseph Stiglitz, recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics, as part of its signature Fireside Chat series. The event drew over 250 students from across PSIA’s master programmes, reflecting the school’s vibrant intellectual community and its commitment to engaging with leading global voices.

In conversation with Professor Thierry Mayer, scientific advisor to PSIA’s Master in International Economic Policy, Professor Stiglitz explored the theme “What Economics for a Good Society?” His remarks spanned a wide range of pressing global issues—from the erosion of multilateralism and the rise of neo-protectionism to Europe’s strategic challenges and the unpredictability of the current U.S. administration.

Reflecting on the historical trajectory of multilateral cooperation, Professor Stiglitz noted that while the United States played a central role in establishing the post-1945 multilateral system, it has often resisted binding trade agreements. “The core idea of multilateralism is that there are benefits from cooperation,” he remarked, cautioning that such cooperation is weakened when dominant powers choose to act outside the rules. From Truman to Trump, he argued, America’s selective engagement has undermined the very institutions it helped create.

Turning to Europe, Professor Stiglitz urged policymakers and institutions to view strategic and technological sovereignty not as a burden, but as a necessity. “It is crucial for Europe’s security that it becomes self-reliable. The tools and the knowledge are there to build independent and resilient systems—it’s time to use them,” he emphasized.

The discussion concluded with a lively Q&A session, showcasing the curiosity and critical thinking that define PSIA’s student body. For those pursuing careers in international economic policy, diplomacy, or global governance, the event offered a compelling reminder that shaping a better society begins with reimagining the principles that underpin our global economy.

At PSIA, students benefit from direct access to world-renowned scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders. Events like this Fireside Chat are part of a broader pedagogical approach that combines academic excellence with real-world relevance—preparing graduates to lead with insight, integrity, and impact.
