Meet the 2025 Summa Cuma Laude: Louisa Utschakowski

Coming from Germany, Louisa Utschakowski has graduated Summa Cum Laude in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action.

What skills/strategy helped you to succeed at PSIA?

I found that one of the most important things was to stay open and curious. Some of the classes I did not expect much from ended up being the most rewarding, offering perspectives I would never have thought of otherwise. I also realized that it is perfectly fine to adjust plans along the way – whether by changing courses or even your concentration – if your interests evolve or your expectations are not being met.

A bit of time management certainly helped me, but in the end, it was also about consistency: keeping up with readings (even if it was impossible to do them all, I focused on the ones that interested me most), taking time to reflect on class discussions, and putting effort into writing and revising assignments. What made this easier and more enjoyable was doing it together with friends and approaching each task as an opportunity to learn something new.

What part of your PSIA experience do you think will be of greatest help in your career?

Coming from Germany, where I completed my bachelor’s degree in a more theory-driven environment, I greatly appreciated the practical and hands-on approach at PSIA. What I found especially enriching were the professors, practitioners and classmates from all over the world, who brought very different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. These exchanges and connections continue to shape the way I think about issues.

Just as valuable was the experience of stepping outside of my comfort zone and familiar environment – moving to a new country, adapting to a different (academic) culture, and immersing myself in a new language. Learning to navigate all of this gave me confidence, resilience, and flexibility that I know will be helpful in whatever comes next.

What advice would you give to current and future PSIA students?

Try not to feel overwhelmed by the volume of assignments and coursework. It can be challenging to juggle so many different responsibilities and tasks at once, but you will manage (trust me!). At the same time, keep a healthy balance with life outside of academics: prioritize friendships, enjoy Paris, and take advantage of the many opportunities the city has to offer. PSIA also provides a lot beyond the classroom, from language and sports courses to a wide range of events and discussions. In the end, it’s the people you meet along the way who make the experience truly memorable and who can turn even the toughest assignments or longest study sessions into something more manageable, and sometimes even enjoyable.
