Inès, 2024 Summa Cum Laude in Human Rights & Humanitarian Action

Coming from Germany, Inès Decker has graduated Summa Cum Laude in Human Rights & Humanitarian Action.

What skills/strategy helped you to succeed at PSIA?

Effective time management and organization were essential for me during my studies at PSIA. I always tried to create a comprehensive plan at the beginning of the semester that scheduled specific times to work on each assignment. Putting in the effort and prioritising tasks, given that the workload can sometimes be quite high, and cooperating with classmates also proved to be immensely important.

What part of your PSIA experience do you think will be of greatest help in your career?

Personally, I think the opportunity to engage in discussions with and hear from fellow students, professors and guest speakers from all different academic, professional, and national backgrounds will be incredibly helpful for me in the future. This exposure has allowed me to approach topics from new and different perspectives, fostering a deeper and more nuanced understanding of global issues. I believe that engaging with such a wide range of viewpoints has equipped me with the skills to remain open to new ideas, find waysto build bridges and to collaborate effectively in a diverse environment.

What advice would you give to current and future PSIA students?

My advice to current and future PSIA students is to really take advantage of the rich and diverse courses and events that PSIA offers and to stay open-minded about new topics. Even if you cannot enroll in your first-choice classes, given that course selection can be stressful and overwhelming, the classes you take instead may be just as interesting or even more so. All of the courses I took, and sometimes especially the ones I did not plan to take, sparked my curiosity and sometimes led me to consider new career paths that I had not initially thought of. For instance, the Master’s focus on International Law, especially Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, which was initially daunting due to my lack of background, quickly became a favorite area of interest and led to an internship in this field.
