The recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his transport to the United States to stand trial signals a dramatic shift in US foreign policy. It was the embodiment of the Trump administration's new US National Security Strategy, which prioritises the defense of the US homeland and its influence in the Western Hemisphere.

The event will discuss what the new US National Security Strategy means for China and Europe, as well as its broader implications. This strategic assessment of the contemporary global order is only possible against a historically informed understanding of the global circulation of the Monroe Doctrine.

With:

  • Stéphanie Balme, FNSP Research Professor; Director of the Center for International Studies (CERI), Sciences Po
  • Zhang Yongle, Dean of the Institute of Studies on Law and Strategy, Peking University
  • Arancha González, Dean of the Paris School of International Relations, and formerly Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in Spain

Moderated by Niccolò Milanese, Scientific Director of Berggruen Institute Europe.
