PSIA is pleased to welcome Ann Fitz-Gerald, Professor of International Security and Director of Balsillie School of International Affairs, for a talk on governance challenges and security policy orientations in a digital era.

What is often described as the eco-system underpinning “transformative technologies” -including data, compute, artificial intelligence, and cyber security - has now become the backbone of today’s general-purpose technologies.

Alongside vast opportunities, this eco-system has created new threat vectors: from the growing role of non-state actors to the expansion of national security domains beyond land, sea, and air to include cyber and space.

For middle powers, the challenge is compounded by fragmented regulatory frameworks and by global rules shaped largely by major powers. Meanwhile, the distinction between economic security and national security is rapidly dissolving, raising urgent questions about resilience, sovereignty, and competitiveness.

This talk will explore what these shifts mean for the national capacity of governments and security policy orientations in a digital era.
