China, Europe and Global Leadership

About this event

05 May 2025 from 18:00 until 19:30

Organized by

Paris School of International Affairs; Berggruen Institute Europe

At a time when the United States of America appears to be pulling back from its long-standing global leadership role, what gap does this create for China and for Europe?  Will China attempt to accelerate its rise and what would this look like? Can Europe act as a global leader of the liberal order? Is a return of nationalism and selfishness inevitable, or is it still possible for there to be a world order based on common values and morality? If such a world can still be imagined, what concrete projects and forms of alliance could make it a reality?

Conducting this enlightening discussion is our distinguished panel of experts:

  • Yan Xuetong, Dean of the Institute of International Relations and Director at the Institute of International Studies at Tsinghua University, Chief Editor of The Chinese Journal of International Politics
  • Pascal Lamy, Coordinator of the Jacques Delors Institutes (Paris, Berlin, Brussels); former Director-General of the World Trade Organisation
  • Arancha Gonzalez, Dean of the Paris School of International Relations, and formerly Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in Spain.

The conversation is moderated by Niccolo Milanese, Scientific Director of Berggruen Institute Europe.

An aperitif following the event was offered by the Berggruen Institute Europe, co-organizer of this event.
