Visiting Faculty

At Sciences Po, Gender Studies are organised through a gender studies cross-cutting programme bringing together researchers from all disciplinary research units. The visiting faculty is be hosted in one of the Science Po research units benefiting from the dynamic of the researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

Spring 2024

Brenda Alegre, Lecturer, Faculty of Arts, Hong Kong University

Brenda Rodriguez Alegre earned her BS, MA and PhD all in Psychology  at the University of Santo Tomas, in the Philippines. Brenda teaches in the Gender Studies Programme of the University of Hong Kong. She has always been among the most visible queer activists in Hong Kong, the Philippines and globally and has appeared on TV and radio. Her research work and interests is mostly on exploring trans and queer identities using interdisciplinary approaches. She was on the Executive board of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) Asia and ILGA World and currently the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines. She also serves as a mentor and expert adviser on Migrant workers. She delivered a statement in 2018 at the United Nations on Transgender Advocacy week and won the Hong Kong LGBTQ plus Public Champion and finalist of Women of Influence in Hong Kong 2022-23.

Spring 2020

Nazand Begikhani, Vincent Wright Chair, UK

Nazand Begikhani is a leading researcher on gender-based violence and has conducted research on many aspects of violence and gender relations, including honour-based violence and honour killings in Iraqi Kurdistan Region and inside the UK Kurdish diaspora, rape and sexual violence in Iraq and Syria, domestic violence, and family policy and practice in Kurdistan. She is currently researching gender-based violence and displacement, theorising women and war, sexual violence and slavery in the Middle East, focusing on ISIS war strategies.

Spring 2017

Fran Bennett, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Social Policy and Intervention, Oxford University, UK

On April-May 2017, the French Economic Observatory (OFCE) hosted Oxford’s senior researcher Fran Bennett as part of the Oxford-Sciences Po programme.

Fran Bennett's research focuses on social security policy, gender issues, and poverty and income distribution. She is also an independent consultant, and has written extensively on social policy issues for the UK government, NGOs and others. She is one of the UK independent experts on social inclusion for the European Commission.

European Projects

January 2021 - December 2024 : Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together (RESET)

The European Project RESET involves 7 large multidisciplinary universities from all over Europe (University of Bordeaux, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Lódz, University of Porto, Ruhr-University Bochum, University of Oulu, Sciences Po). It aims to address the challenge of Gender Equality in Research Institutions in a diversity perspective, with the objective to design and implement a user-centered, impact-driven and inclusive vision of scientific excellence. The project will combine an intersectional approach to gender equality with the collective intelligence fostered and harvested through the co-design of the Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). Sciences Po is the evaluator for this project, through the leadership of Maxime Forest and Hélène Périvier.

June 2018 - May 2022 : Supporting the Promotion of Equality in Research and Academia (SUPERA)

The European Project SUPERA brought together 6 organisations from Southern and Central Europe to implement Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) to articulate a structural understanding of gender inequalities, stereotypes and biases in research as a cross-cutting issue to tackle in their complex, multi-layered dimensions and the inclusion of a gender perspective in research and academia. Maxime Forest and Hélène Périvier represented the French Economic Observatory - Sciences Po as the Principal Evaluator for this project.

January 2014 - December 2018: Effective Gender Equality in Research and the Academia (EGERA) Project

The European Project EGERA has brought together 8 research and higher education institutions across the EU (Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) and Turkey, bound by a same commitment to the dual objective of achieving gender equality in research and the academia, and strengthening the gender dimension in research. The Project aimed at fostering structural change through the implementation of transformative Gender Equality Plans (GEPs).

June 2021: U7+ Intergenerational Roundtable

As part of the U7+ Alliance activities, Sciences Po's Gender Studies Programme worked with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University to offer an Event on Social Sciences to Tackle the Global Gender Gap. A discussion with Sciences Po researcher Hélène Périvier, UM6P Professor Bouchra Rahmouni, Sciences Po student Carolin Beck and UM6P student Fatima Zahra Bouzoubaa was moderated by Kate Vivian, Sciences Po Deputy Vice President for International Affairs.

November 2020 and May 2022: European gender equality and inclusion workshops

As part of CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences, an alliance of eight higher education institutions selected by the European Commission as a pilot European University, Sciences Po's Gender Studies Programme organised two Gender Equality and Inclusion Workshops to discuss best practices and innovation in institutional policies, for scholars and practitioners.

October 2017: a Franco-American symposium

In October 2017, Wellesley College organized an international symposium on education and gender equality. It was one of the largest international conferences about gender equality featured more than 70 international speakers from around the United States as well as Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Speakers included activist, professor and writer Angela Davis, former French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira.
The event was sponsored by the Suzy Newhouse Center for Humanities at Wellesley College, the Consulate General of France in Boston and Sciences Po.

Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law

The Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law brings together over 500 scholars, activists, NGO workers, government anti-discrimination agency lawyers and officials, PhD candidates and other graduate students, and legal practitioners from six continents, to address the problems of systemic inequality and discrimination. Its principal mission is to expand our understanding of inequality and discrimination through the tools of comparative legal studies, and to transfer that knowledge from those who study inequality to those who enforce anti-discrimination law. Its objective is not simply to study the problems of inequality and discrimination, but to help activists/advocates use the work of scholars to bring positive change globally.
