Everything you need to know about the Gap Year

The gap year is available upon request at the School of Research and must be approved by your Academic Advisor

What is a gap year?

A gap year consists of several internships (maximum 6 months per internship) with the option of an academic exchange semester (cannot be substituted for your programme at the School of Research).

It takes place between the first and second years of the Master's programme for one year.

How to take a gap year

Obtain written approval

Provide as many details as possible about your gap year project, for which you must obtain written approval from:

  • Scientific coordinator
  • Academic Advisor
  • Administrative Officer

Please cc in your Head of Studies for information purposes

If the gap year includes an internship (application for internship agreement)

Indicate that the gap year includes an internship in your email requesting authorisation for the gap year and send a copy to Sciences Po Careers for information.  You must obtain the agreement of the persons mentioned above.

  1.  We recommend that you apply for your internship and gap year at the same time
  2. Once you have obtained the agreement of the above-mentioned persons, download and complete the internship agreement via your student account
  3. Sciences Po Careers will sign the agreement

When to make your motivated request for a gap year

Your motivated request for a gap year must be approved by your Academic Advisor before the end of May of your first year of the Master's programme.

In the case of an exchange, please contact the DAI centre responsible for the geographical area of your choice and then submit your preferences via the platform dedicated to outgoing mobility.

Deadline around 15 February.

Tuition fees


Gap year period: 25% of tuition fees with retention of student status.

Academic exchange: 100% of tuition fees for the semester of the exchange
