Presentation of the PhD

The PhD program in political theory is less concerned with describing political phenomena than assessing their implications and significance in terms of values, drawing on both empirical data and normative elements from philosophical and moral doctrines.

The PhD program is supported by the major Sciences Po laboratories that, inter alia, host doctoral students: the Law School's Research Center, the Centre for Political Research at Sciences Po (CEVIPOF), the Centre for International Studies (CERI) and the Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics at Sciences Po (CEE).

Objectives

This program trains students to conduct research in the field of political theory and prepares them for academic careers (research and teaching) and careers as consultants, high-level experts (NGOs, international organizations, etc.) and senior civil servants.  

Political theory has been one of the major sub-disciplines of political science since its origins.

Included in the program of the agrégation française de science politique (the highest teaching diploma in France), political theory is traditionally a favored approach at foreign universities, especially in the English-speaking world. It is less concerned with describing political phenomena and explaining their origin and operating mechanisms than assessing their implications and significance in terms of values, drawing on both empirical data provided by the social sciences and normative elements from philosophical and moral doctrines. Political theory is of particular importance in a world where liberal democracy has imposed a vision of politics that is divorced from any absolute and clear conception of the purposes of social coexistence. Necessary in a world where purposes conflict, political theory can at least help guide, if not settle, authentic deliberation.

The political theory program differs from training provided by philosophy departments. Far from being limited to the study of canonical texts the courses endeavor to show what the texts reveal about the historical and cultural environment that spawned them, what they meant to their contemporaries and what light they might shed on the issues and thinking of our times. From this perspective, political thought is both an object of knowledge and a guide to understanding and evaluating the conflicting dimensions of social reality.

Skills targeted

The program seeks to develop research and critical analysis skills, high-level expertise in various methodological tools, and a solid command of the discipline’s fundamental questions.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Le master de science politique, mention théorie politique, se déroule en deux ans et peut se prolonger par la réalisation d'une thèse en trois ans.

L'ensemble de ces cinq années de formation est appelé parcours doctoral.

La première année du niveau master est consacrée à l'acquisition des éléments de connaissance fondamentaux ainsi qu'à une première initiation à la recherche. Cette formation repose sur des cours fondamentaux, des séminaires de recherche ainsi que sur un tutorat personnalisé.

La seconde année du niveau master complète les connaissances premières par des enseignements spécialisés et la poursuite du tutorat afin d'accompagner la préparation du mémoire de recherche qui constitue le point d'arrivée du master et un des éléments principaux d'évaluation de la capacité des étudiants à poursuivre en thèse.

L'inscription en thèse est autorisée par un jury qui se prononce, à partir des résultats antérieurs et de la qualité du mémoire, sur la capacité des candidats à s'engager dans ce programme de recherche. Cette inscription est ouverte non seulement aux étudiants ayant suivi la formation initiale délivrée par Sciences Po mais également aux titulaires d'un master obtenu dans un autre établissement français ou étranger. Dans ce dernier cas, il peut être demandé aux étudiants de suivre, préalablement à l'engagement de leur recherche doctorale, des enseignements fondamentaux du master de science politique jugés nécessaires à leur formation.

Pendant les trois années de thèse, les doctorants sont encadrés par un directeur de thèse et intégrés au sein de l'un des trois laboratoires de science politique de l'établissement : le Centre de Recherche Politique de Sciences Po (CEVIPOF), le Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI) ou le Centre d'études européennes et de politique comparée (CEE). Les doctorants doivent également suivre au moins trois séminaires doctoraux dont l'un nécessairement extérieur au programme de leur mention. Le diplôme de doctorat en science politique est délivré à l'issue de cette scolarité et de la soutenance de la thèse.
