Portrait of Eric Verhoogen

Eric Verhoogen is Professor in the Department of Economics and in the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University. He is also the Founding Director and present Co-Director of the Center for Development Economics and Policy (CDEP). He is also Research Program Director at the International Growth Centre (IGC), a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a member of the Board of Directors of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and an Affiliate of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (JPAL).

His main research area is industrial development–applied microeconomic research on firms in developing countries. This area overlaps with the fields of development economics, international trade, labour economics, and industrial organization. A recurrent theme in his work is the process of quality upgrading in the manufacturing sectors of developing countries–its causes, consequences, and broader implications. He has several projects that are currently underway - two IGC projects as well as a project supported by the Sloan Foundation on “Reassessing the Role and Design of Industrial Policies for the U.S.”, with Martín Guzman and Joseph Stiglitz.
