Portrait of Melanie Meng Xue

Melanie Meng Xue is Assistant Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She is also a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).

Her research interests include political economy, gender, culture and narrative, and early modern and modern China. She is particularly interested in the rise of women and the self-perpetuation of authoritarian regimes. By tracing the impact of historical events over time and in various institutional settings, her work centres on the role of values, beliefs, and norms in shaping economic and political disparities. One crucial source of cultural values she has found is folklore and a more recent project, she explores cultural change following the Industrial Revolution through the study of proverbs.

The next PEPES Seminar will host Stephane WOLTON (LSE) on June 5th.
