Samuel Bazzi

Samuel BAZZI is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics and at the School of Global Policy & Strategy of the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He is also a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and at the International Growth Center (IGC), a Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Effective Global Action, a Fellow at the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Among his editorial duties, he is Editorial Board Member of the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies and Associate Editor for the Journal of the European Economic Association as well as for the Journal of Development Economics.

His research lies at the intersection of development economics and political economy. He studies how individuals and nations adapt to the challenges of diversity in a global world by exploring the struggle between state and society and how these interactions affect political and economic development. The research is organised around three themes: the microfoundations of migration choice, nation building and cultural change, and religion and the State. In 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) bestowed him a 5-year CAREER Award.

Samuel BAZZI will present a paper, joint with Andreas FERRARA, Martin FISZBEIN, Thomas PEARSON, and Patrick TESTA, at the next PEPES Seminar on the theme:

The Other Great Migration: Southern Whites and the New Right (read abstract, PDF 35.02 KB)
